Canyon Crossings: Indiana Jones Did Them Best

Have you ever encountered canyon crossings on your mountain travels? The bridges are usually rickety and wobbly regardless of the construction. And since so many of us grew up with Indiana Jones we probably don’t trust mountain bridges to start with!

Check out this incredible adventure scene from Temple of Doom where Indiana Jones and his friends make a harrowing escape on an old rope suspension bridge in the jungle.

Beyond Adventure or could a suspension bridge give way?

All Indiana Jones movies are totally beyond adventure. Entertaining but let’s face it, in Temple of Doom Indiana cuts the rope bridge otherwise it seemed pretty solid. How “cool” was it though to be perilously climbing up what was left of the bridge to escape the bad guys?

I think there are plenty of movies featuring rope bridges where a slat gives way and falls into the gorge far below. Death by footbridge always seems to be the fate of bad guys too.

If you’ve ever traveled off the beaten track, you know that rope and wood footbridges can be in complete disrepair. While we aren’t going to go plunging into the gorge below or end up swinging from the remaining anchors, there is a concern for the state of old footbridge crossings. Check out this article below about rope bridges in Peru:

Rooftop in Istanbul: Scene of the Greatest Female Rooftop Chase

I’ve never been to Istanbul let alone to a rooftop in Istanbul. This amazing location was the scene set for one of the greatest female rooftop chases. Check this out:

The location for this amazing rooftop chase in Taken 2 was the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Can you guess what other major action-adventure movie used this exact shoot location?

“Where are they now?”
“They appear to be on the rooftops
of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul”

Ms. Moneypenny in James Bond’s Skyfall

Parkour Lessons from the Rooftop Chase Scene in Istanbul

Investing in parkour lessons would be invaluable if you think you may find yourself in a rooftop chase scenario at any point in the future. Parkour is the art of vaulting, jumping, climbing, rolling, and other movements to get yourself from Point A to Point B. Could this be added to your adventure ideas notebook? Just in case here are the key lessons of parkour that we can learn from the rooftop chase scene in Taken 2:

  • Learn how to launch yourself off of an object
  • Learn how to roll for a soft landing
  • Watch out for overhead wires (okay…maybe this only applies to rooftops)

One of the Biggest Markets in the World and one for the adventure ideas list: The Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the biggest markets in the world and for this reason alone, deserves a visit. While you probably can’t go running amok on the rooftops, here are some cool facts about the market and Istanbul. Adventure ideas could include shopping, eating and drinking or just enjoying the hustle and bustle of the market!
